Learning Reflection


 Dear, Teacher Usa Noitim.

      This blog is the last blog for this semester of the Discourse Approach in Reading. I surely tell you that I had a lot of skills and strategies for reading. It can help very much in the future about how to read, how to analyze, or how to use an appropriate word. So, this is what I got from this course.

What was I learning about A Discourse Approach in Reading course?
      As I told you about what I learn from the blog I had written, I had studied many lessons for this course.
      First, I learned “Recount” It helps me to know how to tell the stories, events, or series that what
happened. Second, I learned “Narrative”. For this lesson, it can help me better to understand the stories that I read for each paragraph and it can help me to read the book better that I can, It really useful. Third, I learned about “Descriptive”. The teacher taught me about how to describe things, person, place, or animal in English. Fourth, I studied “Procedure”. This lesson was told me how to do or how to make something, it was very interesting for me. Fifth, I learn about “Comparison and Contrast”. This lesson showed the pattern that presents similarities between two or more things, differences between two or more things. I made me known how to read things and analyze it about what is the difference in the texts. Sixth, I learned about “Cause and effect”. It made me know what the cause is and what an effect in the text is. Seventh, I learned about “Definition and classification”. This lesson helps me how to know the meaning of the technical term. Next, I learned about “Exemplification” that is adding the more information of the word and the last lesson that I learned was “Problem and Solution” that is a pattern of organization where information in a passage is expressed as a dilemma or concerning issue (a problem) and something that was, can be, or should be done to remedy this issue (solution or attempted solution). I think every lesson that I learn, it could help me very much in daily life or in the future because if you do not know how to read something or how to use the lesson that the teacher taught. We couldn’t read something as well as you could. So, if you try to practice every day or concentrate on learning about this lesson, you could read the text as well and you can improve yourself better that you are. That were I got in this class, “Discourse Approach in Reading course”
What did I find the easy things, while I was studying A Discourse Approach in Reading?
      I think I really like about the discourse marker because they can help me very much to understand about what type of the text is. I think I believe that this course can help me to think about something in common sense as well.

What did I find the difficult things, while I was studying A Discourse Approach in Reading?
      
      One thing that always disturbed me to learn about this course is “I don’t know many vocabularies as much”. It could make me confused sometimes when I found the difficult word in the passage.

How did I solve these problems?

      But I can solve this problem by searching that word from the online dictionary. Anyway, I should more be reading, more practicing, and more remembering the word because I think about my future to be a teacher or knowing something new. If I know many words, I could learn faster. I really believe it.

How do I bring the knowledge of this course to use in my daily life?

      As I told you about what I’d got in this course, I can bring the knowledge to use in my every daily life about in English or Thai because this course makes me how to know about common sense in reading or pronouncing the text. I can adapt the knowledge to the conversation to the foreigner. And I can write the text in English better than I was because I know about the discourse markers and connector words. It can help me very much.

What is my attitude toward this course?
      About my attitude for this course, I think that I really like this course because it can help me to improve my skill in English very much. I was worried about this course in the first class that I studied. But when I learn about this course and continued practice to read and analyze the text that in the handout of each lesson, I was rethinking about it and I have got much knowledge about this course very much. So, I have to say “Thank you so much teacher” for taught me a lot and do not be afraid to educate your students at all. This is may the last time that I have studied with you because I know about your retirement, this is so sad when I know about this for every time I had heard. But I surely believe that you will stay in my heart forever as the best teacher. I will keep everything about your teaching and use it for the future forever.

Problem and Solution Continues

      On Monday 7th May, I continued learned about “Problem and Solution” from last week.
For this week, we studied little because the teacher assigned the homework from last week already. The teacher gave us the corrective feedback and also asked us our homework. Some friends didn’t do that homework yet so she told to that students to get out of the room to complete the homework and sentence explaining the main idea of the passage then create a problem and solution, graphic organizer.” The teacher was also told some friends to write the title, main idea, and graphic organizer on the whiteboard.

      After that, the teacher continued gave us the corrective feedback about the exercise2. After that, the teacher told us for a break in 10 minutes and when we came in, we were going to watch many cooking videos from our friends.

      From my group, I had a group with Wirapat, we had cooked the Spicy chicken burrito with Stir-fried Chinese morning glory.


      On this week, I think I can learn this lesson so easily because I like to analyze the problem and find the solution. But I had found many difficult in the handout. So, I can solve this problem by searching that word from the dictionary and asking for my friends about the difficult words.

      Finally, I really like the class and enjoy with my friends and teacher very much.

Problem and Solution

          On Monday 24th April, we started to learn the new lesson about “Problem and Solution”.
 At first, the teacher opened some words from the Cambridge Dictionary Online for us to pronounce such as:
- problem  (n.) /ˈprɒb.ləm/ = a situation, person, or thing that needs attention and needs to be dealt with or solved
- solve (v.) /sɒlv/ = to find an answer to a problem

      Next, the teacher gave us the handout about the problem and solution and she told us to read in the first page. That was about the purpose of problem and solution. So, it’s a pattern of the organization where information in a passage is expressed as a dilemma or concerning issue (a problem) and
something that was, can be, or should be done to remedy this issue (solution or attempted solution).
      After that, the teacher told us to read the example in the handout and taught us about how to find the problem and a solution passages in the text and she explained us about the markers.

      Next, we did the skill practice in the handout. That was about “circle the Problem Markers and highlight the Solution Markers then write either Problem or Solution in the margin next to the relevant information”.
      I spent a long time to do this practice. After we did it finished, the teacher gave us the corrective feedback and then the teacher continued told us to do the exercise 1 that was ”Read the passages, wrote the title, and the sentence explaining the main idea of the passage then created a problem and solution, graphic organizer”.

      After that, the teacher asked us for the answer about the practice and gave us the corrective feedback of the first text. Finally, the teacher told us to do the other texts for homework.
      For this week, I think I can do the practice in the text as well because I really like to analyze things such as the problem or solution. Furthermore, I had learned about the Discourse Markers of the Problem and Solution in this week. I can do many activities for easily from now on! Because I think that this lesson always uses in daily life.

    I felt good for this week very much.

Exemplification

      On Monday 10th April, we started to learn the lesson about “Exemplification”. After that, she told m
e to check the answers of the text 2 from the last week together explained about species of whales so divided into toothed and baleen in the text. Then, she gave us the corrective feedback.
      After that, the teacher gave us the exemplification handout and told us to read about the purpose of exemplification. And then, the teacher explained us about “commonly used abbreviations and transitions in exemplification text.

      Next, the teacher told us to do the text that was about read the text and complete the diagram then highlight the exemplification markers. After that, she gave us the corrective feedback.

      After that, the teacher told us to do the text 2, 3, and 4. These three texts have about answered the questions correctly. Anyway, in the text 3, these were many difficult words such as:
      Jeopardize (v.) /ˈdʒep.ə.daɪz/ = to put something such as a plan or system in danger of being harmed or damaged
      Hazard (n.) /ˈhæz.əd/ = something that is dangerous and likely to cause damage
      Eliminate (v.) /iˈlɪm.ɪ.neɪt/ = to remove or take away someone or something
      Finally, we were watching the cooking video of our friends.

      I think that the abbreviation and transitions in exemplification text might be difficult for me because I rarely use it in daily life. But, I will solve this problem by reading many texts. I believe I can do it better in the future.

      I felt great and enjoy for this week very much.

Definition and Classification

      Monday 3rd April, I started to learn the new lesson about “definition and classification”. Before we started to learn, the teacher told us about the scores of our mid-term test. So, I got seventeen. I think it was not enough for me but I’ll improve myself more than this. First, the teacher started to explain about definition and classification. Then, she told us to read definition and classification on the projector.

      Next, she taught us about many discourse markers of definition and classification. I think it will help me to find the meaning of the unknown word in the text in the future by finding the discourse markers of definition in the text such as is, i.e., comma, etc.
      After that, she explained us about strategies of definition and classification. She told us to do the skill practice 1 and 2. So she gave us the corrective feedback about this activity. There were many words of this practice such as:
     
Distinguish (v.) /dɪˈstɪŋ.ɡwɪʃ/ = to notice or understand the difference between two things, or to make one person or thing seem different from another
     Psychologist (n.) /saɪˈkɒl.ə.dʒɪst/ = someone who studies the human mind and human emotions and behavior, and how different situations have an effect on people
     Intrinsic (adj.) /ɪnˈtrɪn.zɪk/ = being an extremely important and basic characteristic of a person or thing
      Next, the teacher told us to write more meaning about the words on the white board in front of the class and we continued did the skill practice 3 in the handout. So, the teacher read the text 1 “What is Anthropology?” for us. She told us to read again and answer the questions that follow to pronounce them correctly.

      After that, the teacher told us to talk about the main idea of the text. We answer that was “the last sentence is the main idea: anthropology is to learn how man has developed into his present condition and what potentialities are for future”. Then, the teacher gave us the corrective feedback for us and she finally assigned us to read the text 2 for homework.

      I think I know about this lesson not much. But the teacher taught me for easy, so I can learn and did many activities for this lesson easily. Even I found many difficult words in the practice. I can solve these problems by searching the word from the dictionary or asking my friends about it.

      I felt very happy for this class.

Cause and Effect

            On Monday 20th March, we started to learn the new lesson about “Cause and Effect”. First, the teacher gave us the new handout. Then, she explained about cause and effect and she opened the video of the fourth year student that was about how to cook the food.

      Next, the teacher assigned us to do “practice” and “skill practice 1” in the handout because of she had to go to the inauguration. When she came back to the classroom, she began to explain us about cause and effect. Then, she read text example and practice for us. After that, she explained discourse markers of “cause and effect” and taught us how to pronounce words in this lesson correctly such as:

      Cause (n.) /kɔːz/ = the reason why something, especially something bad, happens
      Effect (n.) /ɪˈfekt/ = the result of a particular influence
      Affect  (v.) /əˈfekt/ =  to have an influence on someone or something, or to cause a change in someone or something

       After that, the teacher gave us the corrective feedback of skill practice 1 and she told us to do “skill practice 2” in the handout. Next, she told us to read “The effect of stress” and answer questions below the text. After we did it finished, she gave us the corrective feedback.


   
For this lesson, I think the effect of stress activity was difficult for me because of I found many difficult words in the text. But, I solved this problem by finding the words on my smartphone, asking my friend, and guessing the meaning of them. It challenging for me.

      I felt enjoy about this class.

"Procedure continues" and “Comparison and Contrast

      On Monday 6th March, I continued studied about “Procedure”. The teacher started to read the text 3 in the handout that was about how to use a toaster. The exercise 2 was “what is the brand of this
product?” The exercise 3 was “identify if the statements below are true (T) or false (F).” and the last one was “complete each of the following sentences with the informati
on from the instructions.”

      Next, we were continued to the next lesson “Comparison and Contrast”. The teacher told us to open the first page of this handout. It was about the purpose, types of procedural texts, text organization, and language features. Next, she told the students to compare between two topics “The high context culture student and the low context” in the example 1.

      After that, the teacher told us to read the text 1 and text 2. Both of them were about the subway airline and the Hurricane. When we finished read that text, the teacher was assign the work from page 38, the topic was about Men and Women: Do They Speak the Same Language?  And do the activities.

      I think that this lesson “Comparison and Contrast" was easy for me because I felt when can choose the best word for compare thing as well.

      I felt great for this week very much.
